Description

A fun and educational project for creating your own edible gems at home, suitable for all ages.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 cups water
  • A heat source (stove)
  • A clean glass jar or container
  • A skewer or string for nucleation
  • A saucepan
  • A spoon
  • Optional: Food coloring or flavored extracts

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan, combine 2 cups of water with 6 cups of granulated sugar. Heat gently, stirring constantly until fully dissolved to create a saturated sugar solution.
  2. Remove the pan from heat and allow it to cool slightly (about 5-10 minutes).
  3. Pour the warm sugar solution into your clean glass jar, leaving about an inch of space at the top.
  4. Dip a skewer or string in the solution and roll it in some sugar to coat. Place it into the jar, ensuring it doesn’t touch the sides or bottom.
  5. Cover the jar with a paper towel or cloth to prevent dust contamination while allowing air circulation. Place it in a warm, undisturbed location.
  6. Check back in a few days to a week for crystal formation. Once they reach your desired size, carefully remove the skewer/string and rinse the crystals under lukewarm water.

Notes

You can add food coloring or flavored extracts to customize your crystals. Experiment with different containers for varied crystal shapes.
