Description
A fun and educational project for creating your own edible gems at home, suitable for all ages.
Ingredients
Scale
- 6 cups granulated sugar
- 2 cups water
- A heat source (stove)
- A clean glass jar or container
- A skewer or string for nucleation
- A saucepan
- A spoon
- Optional: Food coloring or flavored extracts
Instructions
- In a saucepan, combine 2 cups of water with 6 cups of granulated sugar. Heat gently, stirring constantly until fully dissolved to create a saturated sugar solution.
- Remove the pan from heat and allow it to cool slightly (about 5-10 minutes).
- Pour the warm sugar solution into your clean glass jar, leaving about an inch of space at the top.
- Dip a skewer or string in the solution and roll it in some sugar to coat. Place it into the jar, ensuring it doesn’t touch the sides or bottom.
- Cover the jar with a paper towel or cloth to prevent dust contamination while allowing air circulation. Place it in a warm, undisturbed location.
- Check back in a few days to a week for crystal formation. Once they reach your desired size, carefully remove the skewer/string and rinse the crystals under lukewarm water.
Notes
You can add food coloring or flavored extracts to customize your crystals. Experiment with different containers for varied crystal shapes.
