Description
A nostalgic and playful candy-making experience that results in chewy, flavorful saltwater taffy.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 cup light corn syrup
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (or other flavoring)
- Food coloring (optional)
- Powdered sugar (for dusting)
Instructions
- Prepare Your Work Area: Dust a clean countertop with powdered sugar to prevent sticking. Gather all ingredients and a large saucepan for cooking.
- Combine Ingredients: In the saucepan, mix together the sugar, corn syrup, water, and salt. Place over medium heat and stir until the sugar dissolves.
- Cook the Mixture: Allow the mixture to come to a boil without stirring. Use a candy thermometer to check the temperature. Cook until it reaches the soft-ball stage (about 240°F or 115°C).
- Remove from Heat: Take the saucepan off the heat and let it cool slightly (about 5 minutes). Stir in the vanilla extract and food coloring, if using.
- Pull the Taffy: Once it’s cool enough to handle (but still warm), grease your hands and start pulling the taffy. Pull, stretch, and fold the taffy repeatedly until it becomes light and fluffy, about 10-15 minutes.
- Shape and Cut: Flatten the taffy into a rectangle about 1/2 inch thick. Use a sharp knife or kitchen scissors to cut into bite-sized pieces. Wrap them in wax paper to keep them fresh.
Notes
Flavor Swaps: Experiment with different extracts, such as almond or lemon, for unique flavors. Store wrapped taffy in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks.
