Ingredients

- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup salt
- 2 tablespoons cream of tartar
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 2 cups water
- Food coloring (optional)
- Essential oils (optional for scent)
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of flour, 1 cup of salt, and 2 tablespoons of cream of tartar. Stir until mixed.
- In a separate bowl, mix 2 cups of water and 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil. Add food coloring if desired.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry mixture and stir well.
- Transfer the mixture to a saucepan over medium heat. Stir constantly until the dough thickens and begins to come away from the sides of the pan, usually about 3-5 minutes.
- Once thickened, remove from heat and let it cool for a few minutes.
- Once cool enough to handle, knead the dough on a clean surface for a few minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
- If desired, add a few drops of essential oils for a nice scent during play.
Notes
Store homemade play dough in an airtight container for up to 2 months. Freeze for extended shelf life.
