Description

Create a mesmerizing DIY lava lamp using simple household ingredients. This educational project is perfect for all ages and customizable to your liking.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 clear plastic or glass bottle (with a screw-on lid)
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 cups vegetable oil (canola or corn oil)
  • 1015 drops food coloring (various colors)
  • 12 Alka-Seltzer tablets (or similar effervescent tablets)
  • Optional: glitter or small decorative items

Instructions

  1. Start with a clean bottle—ensure it’s clear for the best visual effect. Fill the bottle about one-third full with water.
  2. Slowly pour vegetable oil into the bottle, filling it nearly to the top, leaving some space for the reaction.
  3. Add 10-15 drops of your chosen food coloring to the bottle.
  4. Break one or two Alka-Seltzer tablets into halves. Drop a piece into the bottle and watch the colorful bubbles rise and fall! Repeat as desired for more movement.

Notes

You can experiment with different food color combinations and liquids for varied effects. Adult supervision is recommended for children during the process.
