Description

Create beautiful, crystalline snowflakes using simple materials and a fun process that combines science and art.

Ingredients

  • Pipe cleaners (white or blue)
  • Borax (1 cup)
  • Water (2 cups)
  • Heat-resistant glass jar or bowl
  • Wooden stick or pencil (for suspending the snowflake)
  • String (optional, for hanging)
  • Food coloring (optional, for colored snowflakes)
  • Small spoon for stirring

Instructions

  1. Create Your Snowflake Shape: Bend pipe cleaners into the shape of a snowflake, using at least three arms. Twist to secure the center and create a star-like figure.
  2. Prepare the Borax Solution: In the glass jar, measure 2 cups of water. Gradually add 1 cup of Borax while stirring until fully dissolved.
  3. Add Color (Optional): If desired, add a few drops of food coloring to the solution and stir until mixed.
  4. Suspend Your Snowflake: Tie a piece of string to the snowflake. Lay the wooden stick across the jar’s top and hang the snowflake so it is submerged in the solution without touching the bottom.
  5. Let It Grow: Set the jar in a cool, undisturbed place for at least 6 hours or overnight to allow crystals to form.
  6. Remove and Dry: Carefully take the snowflake out of the solution, rinse it under cold water, and allow it to dry on paper towels.

Notes

Customize shapes and colors to make your snowflakes unique. Use alternative solutions like sugar for different textures.
