Description

Create stunning colorful crystals with this fun and educational craft project suitable for all ages.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup of water
  • 23 cups of Epsom salt or sugar
  • Food coloring (various colors)
  • Clear glass jars or cups
  • Stirring spoon
  • Heat source (like a stove or microwave)
  • String (optional)
  • A pencil or stick for suspension (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Solution: In a pan, heat 1 cup of water until it’s just about boiling. Slowly add in 2-3 cups of Epsom salt (or sugar) while stirring continuously until the salt no longer dissolves – you’ve reached saturation.
  2. Add Color: Divide your saturated solution into separate jars and add a few drops of food coloring to each jar, stirring gently.
  3. Cool and Crystallize: Allow the jars to sit undisturbed in a cool place to let crystals form over several hours to days.
  4. Optional Suspension Method: Tie a piece of string to a pencil, dip the string in the solution, then place the pencil across the top of the jar for larger crystals to grow on the string.

Notes

Experiment with different types of salts or sugars for unique textures and colors. Display your creations in sunlight for added brilliance.
