An exciting and educational activity that creates a mesmerizing visual spectacle using simple ingredients to teach principles of density and chemical reactions.
Ingredients
- Clear glass or plastic jar with lid
- Water
- Vegetable oil
- Alka-Seltzer tablets (or baking soda)
- Food coloring (any color)
- Glow-in-the-dark paint or glow sticks (optional)
- Small funnel (optional)
Instructions
- Clean the jar thoroughly and apply glow paint, if using.
- Use the funnel to fill the jar about one-third full with water.
- Add a few drops of food coloring and stir.
- Slowly pour vegetable oil into the jar until it’s almost full.
- Break an Alka-Seltzer tablet into quarters and drop one piece into the jar.
- Observe as colorful bubbles rise and fall, simulating lava.
- If using glow sticks, activate and drop them into the jar for a glowing effect.
Notes
Experiment with different food coloring and liquid combinations for unique effects. Supervision is recommended for younger children.
