Description

An exciting and educational activity that creates a mesmerizing visual spectacle using simple ingredients to teach principles of density and chemical reactions.


Ingredients

  • Clear glass or plastic jar with lid
  • Water
  • Vegetable oil
  • Alka-Seltzer tablets (or baking soda)
  • Food coloring (any color)
  • Glow-in-the-dark paint or glow sticks (optional)
  • Small funnel (optional)

Instructions

  1. Clean the jar thoroughly and apply glow paint, if using.
  2. Use the funnel to fill the jar about one-third full with water.
  3. Add a few drops of food coloring and stir.
  4. Slowly pour vegetable oil into the jar until it’s almost full.
  5. Break an Alka-Seltzer tablet into quarters and drop one piece into the jar.
  6. Observe as colorful bubbles rise and fall, simulating lava.
  7. If using glow sticks, activate and drop them into the jar for a glowing effect.

Notes

Experiment with different food coloring and liquid combinations for unique effects. Supervision is recommended for younger children.
