Description

Create your own mesmerizing glittery lava lamp at home with simple materials for an engaging craft project that combines science with creativity.

Ingredients

  • Clear plastic or glass bottle (empty soda bottle works great)
  • Water
  • Vegetable oil
  • Food coloring (your choice of colors)
  • Glitter (fine or chunky)
  • Alka-Seltzer tablets or baking soda (for bubbling effect)
  • Funnel (optional)
  • Measuring cup

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Bottle: Rinse your bottle to ensure it’s clean and remove any labels if using a plastic bottle.
  2. Add Water: Fill the bottle about one-third full with water, using a funnel to avoid spills if needed.
  3. Mix in Color: Add a few drops of food coloring to the water and swirl gently.
  4. Pour in Oil: Slowly pour vegetable oil into the bottle until it’s nearly full, leaving space at the top.
  5. Add Glitter: Generously sprinkle glitter into the bottle.
  6. Create Bubbles: Drop an Alka-Seltzer tablet into the mixture. You can break it into smaller pieces for longer-lasting bubbles.

Notes

Experiment with different food colorings and glitter types for unique visual effects. Use various sized bottles for different lava lamp styles.
