Description
Delightfully flaky and tender homemade buttermilk biscuits that bring the warmth of family gatherings to your table.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 3/4 cup buttermilk (plus more for brushing)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
- Add the cold, cubed butter to the dry ingredients. Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, work the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Make a well in the center of the mixture and pour in the buttermilk. Stir gently with a fork until just combined (don’t overmix!).
- Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead gently 3-4 times until it comes together. Roll or pat the dough to about 1-inch thickness.
- Use a biscuit cutter or a glass to cut the dough into 2-inch rounds. Place them on the prepared baking sheet.
- Brush the tops with additional buttermilk for a beautiful golden finish. Bake for 12-15 minutes, until they are golden brown.
- Remove from the oven and let them cool slightly before serving warm.
Notes
For a flavor boost, add shredded cheese, herbs, or spices to the dough. You can freeze uncooked biscuits and bake them straight from the freezer, adding a few minutes to the baking time.
