Description

Craft vibrant rocks that fizz and erupt when they come in contact with water, blending art and science for engaging educational fun.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 1/2 cup citric acid
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • Water (as needed)
  • Food coloring (various colors)
  • Essential oils (optional)
  • Mixing bowl
  • Measuring cups
  • Cookie sheet or tray
  • Silicone molds or ice cube trays

Instructions

  1. Prepare your work area with newspaper or a plastic tablecloth for easy cleanup and gather all materials.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine baking soda, citric acid, and cornstarch, stirring until evenly mixed.
  3. Gradually add food coloring and essential oils (if desired), mixing thoroughly.
  4. Slowly add water, just a few drops at a time, until the mixture can be molded.
  5. Pack the mixture tightly into silicone molds or ice cube trays.
  6. Place the molds on a cookie sheet and let them dry for 24 hours in a cool, dry place.
  7. Once dry, pop the moon rocks out of the molds and test them by pouring water over them to watch them fizz.

Notes

Customize shapes and colors, and feel free to experiment with different scents using essential oils.
