Description

A delightful and colorful project to create stunning crystal forests, combining science and art.


Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup of water
  • 3 tablespoons of Borax
  • Food coloring (variety of colors)
  • Clear glass jar or container
  • Pipe cleaners (in various colors)
  • String
  • Pencil or stick for hanging
  • Optional: Glitter for extra sparkle

Instructions

  1. Shape the pipe cleaners into tree shapes or simple designs like spirals.
  2. Tie a piece of string around the top of the pipe cleaner shape and attach it to a pencil or stick.
  3. Boil 1 cup of water.
  4. Stir in 3 tablespoons of Borax until fully dissolved.
  5. Add several drops of food coloring to achieve desired shades.
  6. Place the pipe cleaner designs into the jar so they hang suspended in the solution.
  7. Set the jar in a quiet location for 24-48 hours, undisturbed.
  8. Watch the beautiful crystals form around the pipe cleaners.
  9. After 24-48 hours, carefully remove the crystal forest from the jar.
  10. Allow it to dry completely before displaying.

Notes

Experiment with different types of salt for various textures and add essential oils for fragrance.
