Description

Create a mesmerizing Rainbow Crystal Forest using simple materials that combines art and science.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup sodium carbonate (washing soda)
  • 1 cup hot water
  • Various colors of food coloring
  • Clear plastic cups or jars
  • Wooden sticks or skewers
  • A shallow tray
  • White glue (optional for crystal “trees”)

Instructions

  1. Mix sodium carbonate with hot water in a clear plastic cup until dissolved.
  2. Divide the solution into multiple cups, adding food coloring to each.
  3. Place wooden sticks in the center of a shallow tray with colored solutions, keeping the sticks submerged.
  4. Allow the tray to sit undisturbed in a warm area for crystallization.
  5. Once crystals form, remove the sticks and let them dry. Use white glue for a snowy effect if desired.

Notes

Customize colors with metallic paint, try Epsom salts if washing soda is unavailable, and integrate ornaments for more whimsy.
