Description

Create a delightful mini aquarium in a jar to add a splash of nature to your space while learning about ecosystems.

Ingredients

  • Clear glass jar with a lid or a vase
  • Small pebbles or aquarium gravel
  • Activated charcoal (for filtration)
  • Potting soil or substrate
  • Aquatic plants (e.g., moss, ferns, or miniature water lilies)
  • Decorative items (small stones, seashells, or figurines)
  • Water (preferably distilled or rainwater)
  • Optional: small aquatic animals (e.g., shrimp or snails)

Instructions

  1. Rinse and clean the jar thoroughly to remove any residues.
  2. Add a layer (about 1 inch) of small pebbles or gravel for drainage.
  3. Sprinkle a thin layer of activated charcoal over the gravel.
  4. Gently add potting soil on top of the charcoal, thick enough for plant roots.
  5. Use fingers to make holes in the soil and insert aquatic plants.
  6. Add decorative items like stones or figurines.
  7. Carefully pour distilled water into the jar to just below the soil surface.
  8. If using a jar with a lid, seal it to maintain humidity and place in a well-lit area, avoiding direct sunlight.

Notes

Consider experimenting with plant choices and different container types for variety.
