Description
Engage in a fun and educational project to create your own mesmerizing lava lamp using common household materials.
Ingredients
- Clear plastic bottle or jar with a lid
- Water
- Vegetable oil
- Alka-Seltzer tablets
- Food coloring (optional)
- Funnel (for easier pouring)
- Optional: Glitter or small decorations
Instructions
- Start with a clean, clear plastic bottle or jar. Use a funnel to fill it about one-third with water.
- Slowly pour vegetable oil into the bottle, filling it almost to the top. Observe how the oil floats above the water.
- Drop in a few drops of food coloring if desired, noting that it mixes with water but remains below the oil layer.
- Break an Alka-Seltzer tablet into smaller pieces and drop one piece into the bottle, watching the lava lamp effect unfold.
- When bubbling slows down, add another piece of Alka-Seltzer to keep the reaction going.
Notes
Experiment with different liquids and colors for varying effects. Ensure adult supervision for children during the project.
