Description

Engage in a fun and educational project to create your own mesmerizing lava lamp using common household materials.

Ingredients

  • Clear plastic bottle or jar with a lid
  • Water
  • Vegetable oil
  • Alka-Seltzer tablets
  • Food coloring (optional)
  • Funnel (for easier pouring)
  • Optional: Glitter or small decorations

Instructions

  1. Start with a clean, clear plastic bottle or jar. Use a funnel to fill it about one-third with water.
  2. Slowly pour vegetable oil into the bottle, filling it almost to the top. Observe how the oil floats above the water.
  3. Drop in a few drops of food coloring if desired, noting that it mixes with water but remains below the oil layer.
  4. Break an Alka-Seltzer tablet into smaller pieces and drop one piece into the bottle, watching the lava lamp effect unfold.
  5. When bubbling slows down, add another piece of Alka-Seltzer to keep the reaction going.

Notes

Experiment with different liquids and colors for varying effects. Ensure adult supervision for children during the project.
