Description

Create your own mesmerizing lava lamp using simple household materials and watch the colorful bubbles dance.

Ingredients

  • A clean, clear plastic or glass bottle (preferably with a cap)
  • Water
  • Vegetable oil (or mineral oil)
  • Alka-Seltzer tablets
  • Food coloring (optional)
  • Funnel (optional)

Instructions

  1. Rinse and dry your bottle thoroughly if it has been used. Place the bottle on a stable surface to prevent spills.
  2. Use a funnel to add water until the bottle is about one-quarter full. Observe how the water settles at the bottom.
  3. Slowly pour vegetable oil into the bottle until it is nearly full, leaving some space at the top. Watch as the oil floats on top of the water—notice the clear demarcation.
  4. Add a few drops of food coloring to the bottle. Observe how the color drops sink through the oil and mix with the water.
  5. Break an Alka-Seltzer tablet into small pieces and drop one piece into the bottle. Watch as it fizzes—tiny bubbles form and rise through the oil, creating a lava lamp effect!
  6. If you want to keep the show going, continue adding small pieces of the tablet.

Notes

Experiment with different color combinations and sizes of bottles for unique effects. Consider placing a small flashlight under the bottle for a glowing effect.
