Description

Create your own mesmerizing DIY lava lamp using simple household ingredients while exploring chemical reactions.

Ingredients

  • Clear plastic bottle or jar with a lid
  • Water
  • Vegetable oil (or baby oil)
  • Alka-Seltzer tablets
  • Food coloring (optional)
  • Glitter (optional)
  • Funnel (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Your Bottle: Start with a clean, dry plastic bottle or jar. Use a funnel if available to prevent spills.
  2. Add Water: Fill the bottle about one-quarter full with water.
  3. Pour in the Oil: Open the bottle and carefully pour in vegetable or baby oil until it’s almost full, leaving space at the top.
  4. Add Color: If desired, add a few drops of food coloring to the water.
  5. Activate with Alka-Seltzer: Break an Alka-Seltzer tablet into smaller pieces and drop one piece into the bottle to see the reaction!
  6. Repeat: Add more pieces of Alka-Seltzer to keep the effect going as needed.

Notes

Customization options include using glow-in-the-dark paint or different shaped jars. Ensure to clean up spills promptly.
