Description

Explore the wonders of density and chemical reactions by creating your own mesmerizing DIY lava lamp with simple household ingredients.

Ingredients

  • Clear bottle or jar (empty)
  • Water (about 3/4 full)
  • Vegetable oil (1/4 of the bottle’s volume)
  • Food coloring (any color of your choice)
  • Alka-Seltzer tablets or baking soda (optional for reaction)
  • Optional: Glitter or small decorative items for added flair

Instructions

  1. Clean the bottle or jar thoroughly and make sure it’s dry.
  2. Fill the bottle about 3/4 full with water.
  3. Carefully add vegetable oil until the bottle is nearly full, allowing the oil to float on top of the water.
  4. Add a few drops of food coloring and watch it pass through the oil and mix with the water.
  5. Carefully break an Alka-Seltzer tablet into pieces and add them one by one to create bubbles and the ‘lava’ effect.
  6. Observe the captivating movement and add more tablets to keep the reaction going.
  7. For added flair, sprinkle glitter into the bottle.
  8. If desired, seal the bottle with a lid for safety and display.

Notes

Experiment with colors and bottle sizes for different effects. Use sparkling water as an alternative for a fizzy reaction.
