Description

Create your own mesmerizing DIY lava lamp with simple household items, learning about density and chemical reactions in the process.


Ingredients

  • Clear plastic bottle (16 oz or larger)
  • Water
  • Vegetable oil
  • Food coloring (any color)
  • Alka-Seltzer (or any effervescent tablet)
  • Optional: Glitter or small beads for extra flair

Instructions

  1. Fill the Bottle: Fill the plastic bottle about one-quarter full with water.
  2. Add Oil: Pour vegetable oil into the bottle until it’s nearly full, leaving some space at the top.
  3. Mix Coloring: Add several drops of food coloring to the water and watch as the color sinks through the oil.
  4. Drop in Alka-Seltzer: Break an Alka-Seltzer tablet into smaller pieces. Add one piece at a time and observe the bubbly movements.
  5. Optional Glitter: Add a pinch of glitter or small beads for a sparkling effect.
  6. Seal and Enjoy: Tighten the cap and enjoy the mesmerizing movement, adding more Alka-Seltzer as needed to reuse.
