Description

Create your own unique lava lamp with simple materials that illustrate basic chemistry principles while providing a colorful and fun decor piece.

Ingredients

  • Clear bottle or jar with a lid
  • Water
  • Vegetable oil or baby oil
  • Food coloring (your choice of colors)
  • Alka-Seltzer tablets (or any effervescent tablets)
  • Optional: glitter for extra sparkle
  • Funnel (for easy pouring)

Instructions

  1. Start with a clear bottle or jar and using a funnel, fill it about one-quarter full with water.
  2. Slowly pour vegetable oil or baby oil into the bottle until it’s nearly full, leaving some space at the top.
  3. Add a few drops of food coloring into the bottle.
  4. Break an Alka-Seltzer tablet into smaller pieces and drop one piece into the bottle to activate the lava lamp effect.
  5. Secure the cap on the bottle after enjoying the display.

Notes

Supervise children during the project and avoid opening the bottle while it’s active.
