Description

A fun and educational craft project to create colorful lava-crystal rocks using simple materials to explore crystallization.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 tablespoons Epsom salt
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • Food coloring
  • Clear jars or cups
  • Wooden sticks or spoons
  • Optional: Glitter for extra sparkle

Instructions

  1. Boil about 1 cup of water.
  2. In a clear jar, add 3 tablespoons of Epsom salt.
  3. Slowly pour the boiling water into the jar, stirring carefully until the salt dissolves completely.
  4. Add a few drops of food coloring to the mixture, stirring gently.
  5. Let the solution cool for about 10 minutes.
  6. Place a wooden stick or a spoon into the jar, making sure it’s not touching the bottom.
  7. Cover your jar with a paper towel to avoid dust and let it sit undisturbed in a warm area for 24–48 hours.
  8. Once you’re happy with the growth, gently remove the stick and allow the crystals to dry on a paper towel.
  9. Showcase your beautiful lava-crystal rocks in a sunny spot!

Notes

Try mixing different food colors for unique hues and consider using larger containers for bigger crystal formations.
