A fun and educational craft project to create colorful lava-crystal rocks using simple materials to explore crystallization.
Ingredients
Scale
- 3 tablespoons Epsom salt
- 1 cup boiling water
- Food coloring
- Clear jars or cups
- Wooden sticks or spoons
- Optional: Glitter for extra sparkle
Instructions
- Boil about 1 cup of water.
- In a clear jar, add 3 tablespoons of Epsom salt.
- Slowly pour the boiling water into the jar, stirring carefully until the salt dissolves completely.
- Add a few drops of food coloring to the mixture, stirring gently.
- Let the solution cool for about 10 minutes.
- Place a wooden stick or a spoon into the jar, making sure it’s not touching the bottom.
- Cover your jar with a paper towel to avoid dust and let it sit undisturbed in a warm area for 24–48 hours.
- Once you’re happy with the growth, gently remove the stick and allow the crystals to dry on a paper towel.
- Showcase your beautiful lava-crystal rocks in a sunny spot!
Notes
Try mixing different food colors for unique hues and consider using larger containers for bigger crystal formations.
