Ingredients

  • Pipe cleaners (white or clear)
  • Borax (found in the laundry aisle)
  • Water
  • A glass jar or bowl
  • String or fishing line
  • A pencil or stick
  • Food coloring (optional)

Instructions

  1. Shape the Snowflakes: Twist pipe cleaners together to form a snowflake shape.
  2. Heat Water: Boil about 2 cups of water and mix in 3 tablespoons of Borax until dissolved.
  3. Attach the Snowflake: Tie string around the center of the snowflake.
  4. Lower into Solution: Attach the other end to a pencil or stick and suspend in the solution.
  5. Wait for Crystals: Let sit undisturbed for 6-24 hours.
  6. Remove and Rinse: Take out the snowflake, rinse with cold water, and let dry completely.

Notes

For colored crystals, add food coloring; experiment with different snowflake designs and layering for thicker crystals.
