Description

Create stunning DIY crystal snowflakes using simple household materials and discover the science of crystallization.

Ingredients

  • Pipe cleaners (any color, preferably blue or white)
  • Boiling water (1 cup)
  • Borax (1/4 cup)
  • Glass jars or cups
  • Wooden skewers or pencils
  • String (optional)
  • Food coloring (optional)

Instructions

  1. Shape the pipe cleaners into the snowflake design, aiming for at least 6 arms.
  2. In a heat-resistant container, pour 1 cup of boiling water and add 1/4 cup of borax while stirring until dissolved. Optional: add food coloring.
  3. Attach a wooden skewer or pencil across the jar’s top and hang the snowflake from the skewer, ensuring it’s submerged but not touching the bottom.
  4. Let the jars sit undisturbed in a cool, dry area for 24 hours to allow crystals to form.
  5. Carefully remove the snowflake from the solution and let it dry completely on a paper towel.

Notes

Experiment with colors and shapes for unique designs. Adult supervision is recommended when handling boiling water.
