Ingredients
- Borax powder
- Water
- Food coloring (optional)
- Pipe cleaners (any shape)
- A jar or glass container
- Boiling water
- Spoon for stirring
- String (optional)
- Pencil or stick (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the Pipe Cleaners: Twist the pipe cleaners into fun shapes (like stars or hearts) and ensure they can fit into your jar without touching the sides.
- Boil the Water: Heat water until it reaches a rolling boil, using caution and parental supervision.
- Mix the Solution: In a large bowl or jar, mix 3 tablespoons of borax for every cup of boiling water. Stir well until the borax is completely dissolved.
- Add Color: If desired, add a few drops of food coloring and stir gently.
- Suspend the Pipe Cleaner: Carefully place the pipe cleaner shape into the solution. If using string, tie it to a pencil or stick across the top of the jar.
- Wait and Watch: Set the jar in a location where it won’t be disturbed and observe the crystals forming over the next several hours to days.
Notes
Adult supervision is recommended during the boiling step. Experiment with different shapes and colors for unique results.
