Description
Learn to create beautiful, eco-friendly bioplastic suncatchers that add color and light to your home while promoting sustainability.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup of cornstarch
- 2 tablespoons of vinegar
- 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil
- 1 cup of water
- Food coloring (various colors)
- Cookie cutters or molds
- Parchment paper
- Baking sheet
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan, combine the cornstarch, vinegar, vegetable oil, and water. Stir the mixture over low heat, ensuring there are no lumps.
- Continue stirring until the mixture begins to thicken, then remove from heat when it reaches a smooth, uniform texture (about 5 minutes).
- Divide the mixture into separate bowls, adding drops of food coloring to each and stirring until desired shades are reached.
- On a baking sheet, place squares of parchment paper and pour the colored mixture onto the parchment using cookie cutters or molds, aiming for 1/4 inch thickness.
- Allow the suncatchers to dry completely, which can take several hours to overnight. Optionally, place them in the oven at a low temperature (around 200°F) for quicker drying.
- Once dry, gently remove the suncatchers from the molds and hang them in windows to let the light shine through!
Notes
Experiment with different shapes and textures, and consider using natural dyes for coloring.
