Description
Create stunning crystal trees using simple materials while exploring the science of crystallization.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup water
- 3 tablespoons Epsom salt (or table salt)
- A small pot for boiling water
- A heat-resistant container (like a glass jar)
- Food coloring (optional)
- String or wire for tree branches
- A small base (like cardboard or a piece of wood) for stability
Instructions
- Boil the water in a small pot. Slowly add salt, stirring continuously until it fully dissolves. Optionally, add a few drops of food coloring to the mixture for colorful crystals.
- Use the string or wire to create a tree-like structure, securing it to the base. Ensure the branches are spaced for maximum crystal growth.
- Carefully pour the saltwater solution into the heat-resistant container, filling it about halfway. Place the tree structure into the solution, ensuring the ends of the branches are submerged.
- Place the container in a cool, undisturbed location. Over several hours to days, watch the crystals start to grow around the tree.
- Once your crystals have formed, gently remove the tree from the solution. Allow it to dry before displaying.
Notes
Experiment with different types of salt or add glitter for a sparkling finish. Create themed displays for special occasions.
