Description

Create your own beautiful crystal tree with this fun and educational experiment that combines science and creativity.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup Borax
  • 2 cups Water
  • Pipe cleaners (various colors)
  • A sturdy container or jar
  • A pencil or stick (for hanging the tree)
  • String (optional for hanging)
  • Food coloring (optional)
  • Scissors

Instructions

  1. Shape the pipe cleaners into a tree design with branches, twisting multiple together for fullness.
  2. Heat 2 cups of water until nearly boiling, then gradually add 1/2 cup of borax, stirring until completely dissolved. Add food coloring if desired.
  3. Tie the top of the tree to a pencil or stick and suspend it in the borax solution without touching the sides or bottom.
  4. Leave the container undisturbed in a cool, dry place, and check periodically as crystals form over the next few days.
  5. Once fully grown, carefully remove the tree, rinse it gently, let it dry, and display it as a decoration.

Notes

Customize colors with different food color combinations and swap containers for various crystal formations.
