Description
A fun and educational experiment that allows you to create beautiful crystals using simple materials.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup of water
- 1 cup of sugar or salt
- 1 saucepan
- 1 spoon
- 1 clear glass jar or container
- String or pencil
- Food coloring (optional)
- Stove
Instructions
- Boil 1 cup of water in a saucepan.
- Gradually stir in 1 cup of sugar or salt until fully dissolved, creating a saturated solution. Stir continuously until the solution is clear.
- If desired, add a few drops of food coloring to your solution. Stir to evenly distribute the color.
- Remove the saucepan from heat and let the solution cool for a few minutes. Pour the solution into a clear glass jar or container, leaving some space at the top.
- Tie a piece of string to a pencil, allowing the string to hang down into the solution without touching the bottom of the jar. Place the pencil across the top of the jar, balancing it in place.
- Place the jar in a quiet, undisturbed area. Over the next few days, observe the formation of crystals as they begin to grow on the string and the bottom of the jar.
- After several days to a week, carefully remove the fully formed crystals from the jar to admire your creation!
Notes
For customization, experiment with different colors, solvents, or sizes of crystals. Make sure to protect your setup outdoors.
