Description
Create your own mesmerizing crystal-growing tree, combining art and science while learning about crystallization.
Ingredients
- Boric acid or sugar (for crystal formation)
- Water (hot, for dissolving)
- Glass or jar (to grow the crystals in)
- String (to hang the branches)
- Wooden sticks or a twig (as the tree’s base)
- Food coloring (optional, for colored crystals)
Instructions
- Start by gathering your wooden sticks or twig as the trunk and branches of your tree. Securely place it in your glass or jar.
- Boil water in a pot and slowly add your boric acid or sugar, stirring continuously. Keep adding until no more dissolves; this means you’ve created a saturated solution.
- Stir in a few drops of food coloring to your solution for colorful crystals (optional).
- Carefully pour the solution into your glass jar, ensuring the base of your tree is submerged. Use the string to dangle your wooden branches in the solution.
- Place the jar in a cool, undisturbed area and wait for several hours or overnight as crystals begin to grow.
- Once formed, carefully remove the tree and let it dry before displaying it.
Notes
Experiment with different solutes or shapes for varied crystal types. You can also use multiple food colorings for a rainbow effect.
