Description
A fun and educational craft project where you can create beautiful crystal growing ornaments using simple materials.
Ingredients
- Borax powder (1 cup)
- Water (2 cups)
- Large heat-proof container (like a glass jar)
- Pipe cleaners (color of your choice)
- String or fishing line
- Pencil (for suspension)
- Food coloring (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare Your Pipe Cleaners: Shape your pipe cleaners into desired tree forms or shapes (e.g., tree, star). Use multiple pipe cleaners for a fuller look.
- Suspend the Ornaments: Tie string or fishing line to the top of the ornament. Attach the other end to a pencil, ensuring the ornament can hang in the solution without touching the bottom of the container.
- Mix the Solution: Boil 2 cups of water in a pot. Stir in 1 cup of Borax until completely dissolved. This creates a saturated solution. Add food coloring if desired for colored crystals.
- Grow Your Crystals: Pour the Borax solution into the container. Submerge your ornament into the solution, ensuring it’s not touching the sides or bottom. Place the container in a cool, undisturbed area overnight.
- Observe the Growth: Check the ornaments after 12-24 hours. Crystals will start forming. Optional: Leave them in longer for larger crystals.
- Remove and Dry: Gently remove the ornaments from the solution and let them dry on a paper towel.
Notes
Experiment with different shapes, sizes, and colors for unique designs. This project is best supervised, especially during boiling and mixing.
