Description
A captivating science experiment that transforms water and sugar into beautiful, sparkling crystals at home.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup of water
- 3 tablespoons of sugar (or salt for different crystal types)
- 1 clean glass jar
- Heatproof container for boiling water
- Wooden stick or string (for crystal attachment)
- Optional: Food coloring (for colored crystals)
- Optional: Small whisk or stirring tool
Instructions
- Prepare the Solution: In a heatproof container, bring 1 cup of water to a boil. Carefully add 3 tablespoons of sugar to the boiling water, whisking until completely dissolved.
- Add Color (Optional): Mix in a few drops of food coloring into the solution.
- Set Up the Jar: Pour the hot sugar solution into the clean glass jar. Tie the wooden stick or string to the inside of the jar.
- Allow Crystals to Form: Seal the jar and place it in a location where it can remain undisturbed for several days.
- Observe and Harvest: Check daily as your crystals begin to form. After about a week, carefully remove the stick or string and let the crystals dry.
Notes
Experiment with different types of sugar or salt for various crystals. Larger crystals can be achieved with more sugar and slower cooling.
