Description
A fun and educational project to create stunning crystals at home using simple materials.
Ingredients
Scale
- Borosilicate Glass Jar (or heat-resistant jar)
- 1 cup Water (distilled preferred)
- 3 tablespoons Epsom Salt (or sugar/borax as alternatives)
- Spoon (for stirring)
- Stirring Stick (optional, for larger crystals)
- Food Coloring (optional)
- Towel (to protect your working surface)
- String or Pipe Cleaners (for hanging crystals)
- Pencil or Stick (to suspend the crystal)
Instructions
- Boil Water: Heat about 1 cup of distilled water to a boil.
- Mix in Epsom Salt: Gradually add 3 tablespoons of Epsom salt to the boiling water while stirring until it no longer dissolves.
- Add Color: Mix in a few drops of food coloring if desired.
- Pour the Solution: Carefully pour the hot saltwater solution into a clean, heat-resistant glass jar, filling it about halfway.
- Suspend the String: Tie a small piece of string or pipe cleaner to a pencil, balance it across the top of the jar, allowing it to hang in the solution.
- Stir Occasionally: Gently stir the solution once or twice a day.
- Wait Patiently: Leave the jar undisturbed in a cool, dry place for several days for crystals to form.
- Enjoy the Process: Observe daily changes in size and shape of the crystals.
- Harvest the Crystals: After 5-7 days, gently remove the crystals from the solution and allow them to dry.
Notes
Try different shapes for the string and alternative materials like sugar or borax for variations in crystal growth.
