Description
An engaging hands-on activity to introduce concepts of science and chemistry while growing beautiful crystals.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup of water
- 2 cups of sugar (or salt for different types of crystals)
- Heat-resistant container (like a glass jar)
- Spoon
- String or a wooden stick (for hanging)
- Optional: Food coloring for colorful crystals
Instructions
- Boil 1 cup of water in a pot.
- Gradually add in 2 cups of sugar while stirring continuously. Ensure all sugar is dissolved; observe the water turning clear.
- Pour the sugar solution into a heat-resistant container or jar. If desired, add a few drops of food coloring and stir gently.
- Tie a piece of string or a wooden stick across the top of the jar so that it hangs into the solution. Make sure it doesn’t touch the bottom.
- Leave the jar in a spot where it won’t be disturbed. Observe the temperature change as the solution cools.
- Check on the progress after a few days and enjoy as crystals begin forming! Resist the urge to shake or move the jar.
Notes
Customize the solution: Swap sugar for salt to create different types of crystals. Experiment with colors for themed crystal colors.
