A fun and educational craft that combines art with science, creating beautiful butterflies using chromatography techniques.
Ingredients
- Coffee filters
- Washable markers (various colors)
- Water spray bottle
- Scissors
- Pipe cleaners (for antennae)
- Googly eyes (optional)
- Paper towel (for drying)
Instructions
- Prepare your workspace by covering a clean, flat surface with newspaper or a plastic sheet.
- Create a butterfly shape by folding each coffee filter in half twice and cutting rounded shapes along the open edge.
- Add color with washable markers on the coffee filter.
- Lightly mist the colored coffee filter with water using a spray bottle and observe the colors spread.
- Place the colored filter flat on a paper towel to dry completely.
- Once dry, pinch the center of the coffee filter and twist a pipe cleaner around it to form the butterfly’s body and antennae.
- Optionally, glue on googly eyes for fun.
Notes
Experiment with different types of markers and add glitter for a sparkling effect. This activity is suitable for all ages and can be done indoors or outdoors.
