Description

A fun and educational craft that combines art with science, creating beautiful butterflies using chromatography techniques.

Ingredients

  • Coffee filters
  • Washable markers (various colors)
  • Water spray bottle
  • Scissors
  • Pipe cleaners (for antennae)
  • Googly eyes (optional)
  • Paper towel (for drying)

Instructions

  1. Prepare your workspace by covering a clean, flat surface with newspaper or a plastic sheet.
  2. Create a butterfly shape by folding each coffee filter in half twice and cutting rounded shapes along the open edge.
  3. Add color with washable markers on the coffee filter.
  4. Lightly mist the colored coffee filter with water using a spray bottle and observe the colors spread.
  5. Place the colored filter flat on a paper towel to dry completely.
  6. Once dry, pinch the center of the coffee filter and twist a pipe cleaner around it to form the butterfly’s body and antennae.
  7. Optionally, glue on googly eyes for fun.

Notes

Experiment with different types of markers and add glitter for a sparkling effect. This activity is suitable for all ages and can be done indoors or outdoors.
