Description
Create beautiful butterflies using coffee filters and water-based markers. A fun and educational craft that combines art and science!
Ingredients
- Coffee filters (white)
- Water-based markers (variety of colors)
- Spray bottle (with water)
- Pipe cleaners (for the butterfly body)
- Scissors
- Paper towels or newspaper (to protect your workspace)
Instructions
- Prepare Your Workspace: Lay down paper towels or newspaper to protect the surface from any potential mess.
- Color the Coffee Filters: Take a coffee filter and flatten it out. Use water-based markers to create vibrant designs. Encourage children to draw circles, swirls, or any pattern they like.
- Spray with Water: Once the filter is decorated, use a spray bottle to lightly mist the filter with water. Watch as the colors start to blend and spread – this is the chromatography process in action!
- Dry the Filters: Allow the colored filters to dry completely. This could take about 30 minutes, depending on how much water was used.
- Create the Butterfly Shape: Once dry, pinch the coffee filter in the middle to form a butterfly shape. Twist a pipe cleaner tightly around the pinched part to secure it and create the butterfly’s body.
- Enhance the Design: Optional: Shape the ends of the pipe cleaner into antennae for a finished look.
Notes
Customize colors, add glitter, or experiment with larger filters for variety. Suitable for all ages.
