Description

Craft beautiful crystal trees from cardstock using a simple Borax solution in this engaging project for all ages.


Ingredients

  • Cardstock paper (variety of colors)
  • Water
  • Borax (1/2 cup)
  • Small pot or saucepan
  • Heat source (stove)
  • Spoon for stirring
  • Cookie sheet
  • Aluminum foil
  • Food coloring (optional)
  • Scissors
  • String or fishing line (for hanging)

Instructions

  1. Use scissors to cut the cardstock into desired tree shapes.
  2. Punch a small hole at the top of each tree and thread with string or fishing line.
  3. In a saucepan, bring 2 cups of water to a boil on the stove.
  4. Stir in 1/2 cup of Borax until completely dissolved.
  5. If desired, add food coloring and stir gently.
  6. Line a cookie sheet with aluminum foil to catch excess crystals.
  7. Submerge the cardstock tree shapes into the Borax solution for at least 30 minutes.
  8. Carefully remove the trees, letting excess solution drip back into the pot.
  9. Place the dipped trees onto the foil-lined cookie sheet and leave to dry overnight.
  10. Check the next day to see the crystals that have developed on the cardstock!
