Description

A captivating craft that combines science and creativity to create colorful, bubbling lava in a jar, ideal for teaching concepts like density and chemical reactions.

Ingredients

  • Clear jar or glass (wide-mouth recommended)
  • Water
  • Vegetable oil (any type)
  • Food coloring (your choice of colors)
  • Baking soda
  • Vinegar
  • Spoon for stirring
  • Optional: Glitter or small decorative items

Instructions

  1. Fill the clear jar about one-third full with water. Add a few drops of food coloring and stir gently.
  2. Slowly pour vegetable oil into the jar until it’s nearly full.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix a tablespoon of baking soda with a small amount of water to create a paste. Spoon the paste into the jar.
  4. Pour vinegar into the jar quickly and step back to watch the bubbling reaction.
  5. Watch for a few minutes, and add more vinegar or baking soda for prolonged bubbling.

Notes

Customize colors, experiment with ratios of water and oil, and add glitter for extra sparkle. This experiment is safe for kids with adult supervision.
