Description

Create a visually stunning and educational boiling lava lamp jar using simple materials. Perfect for all ages, this project combines creativity with hands-on science.

Ingredients

  • A clean, clear glass jar with a lid
  • Water
  • Vegetable oil (approximately 1 cup)
  • Food coloring
  • Baking soda (1 tablespoon)
  • Vinegar (1/2 cup)
  • Optional: glitter or small decorative items

Instructions

  1. Start by filling the jar halfway with water, leaving some space at the top for the oil.
  2. Slowly pour vegetable oil into the jar until it reaches the top, observing how the oil floats on top of the water.
  3. Add a few drops of food coloring to the water, watching the color sink through the oil.
  4. In a separate bowl, mix 1 tablespoon of baking soda with 1/2 cup of vinegar and observe the fizzing reaction.
  5. Slowly pour the baking soda-vinegar mixture into the jar and enjoy the bubbling action as colorful lava rises and falls!

Notes

Experiment with different color combinations and scents. Supervision is recommended for children when handling vinegar and baking soda.
