Description

Create stunning and eco-friendly bioplastic sun catchers that can brighten your living space while learning about sustainability.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup of corn starch
  • 1 cup of water
  • 1 tablespoon of corn syrup
  • Food coloring (various colors)
  • Cookie cutters or molds
  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • Oven or microwave
  • Paintbrush (optional)
  • Scissors (to trim edges if necessary)

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan, combine 1 cup of corn starch, 1 cup of water, and 1 tablespoon of corn syrup. Heat the mixture over medium heat while stirring continuously until it thickens (3-5 minutes). Remove from heat and allow it to cool slightly.
  2. Once the mixture is cool enough to handle, divide it into separate bowls for different colors. Add food coloring to each bowl and mix until desired shades are achieved.
  3. On a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, use cookie cutters or molds to create shapes from the colored bioplastic, leaving them about 1/4 inch thick.
  4. Place the baking sheet in an oven preheated to 175°F (80°C) for 1-2 hours, or allow them to air-dry for 24-48 hours.
  5. Once dry, carefully remove the sun catchers from the parchment paper and trim any uneven edges if desired.

Notes

Experiment with different shapes, layering colors, or adding glitter for a unique touch. Store any unused bioplastic mixture in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week.
