Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 small jar or glass container
  • 2 tablespoons of baking soda
  • 1/2 cup of vinegar
  • Food coloring (optional, for visual effect)
  • Dish soap (optional, for added bubbles)
  • Tray or large dish (to catch overflow)
  • Measuring spoons

Instructions

  1. Start by placing your jar in the center of a tray or large dish to catch any spills.
  2. Add 2 tablespoons of baking soda to the jar for the base of your volcano.
  3. If you want a colorful eruption, add a few drops of food coloring on top of the baking soda.
  4. For a more bubbly explosion, add a squirt of dish soap to enhance the reaction.
  5. Slowly pour 1/2 cup of vinegar into the jar.
  6. Watch as the mixture fizzes and bubbles dramatically, creating the effect of a volcanic eruption!
  7. Observe the reaction unfold, and discuss the science behind it, like the acid-base reaction occurring.
