Description

Create beautiful snowflake ornaments using baking soda with this fun and educational craft suitable for all ages.


Ingredients

  • Baking soda
  • Water
  • Jar or container
  • String or thread
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Food coloring (optional)
  • Small saucepan
  • Stove or hot plate
  • Spoon
  • Baking sheet

Instructions

  1. Twist pipe cleaners into snowflake shapes.
  2. In a saucepan, mix 1 cup of baking soda with 1/3 cup of water, and heat over medium until dissolved.
  3. Add food coloring to the mixture if desired.
  4. Place the snowflake shapes in a jar or container and pour the baking soda solution over them.
  5. Tie a string to the top of the snowflake and suspend it in the jar.
  6. Let the jar sit undisturbed for 24-48 hours for crystal growth.
  7. Carefully remove the snowflakes and allow them to dry on a baking sheet.

Notes

For added sparkle, sprinkle glitter over your wet snowflakes. You can also experiment with different shapes and colors.
