Create beautiful snowflake ornaments using baking soda with this fun and educational craft suitable for all ages.
Ingredients
- Baking soda
- Water
- Jar or container
- String or thread
- Pipe cleaners
- Food coloring (optional)
- Small saucepan
- Stove or hot plate
- Spoon
- Baking sheet
Instructions
- Twist pipe cleaners into snowflake shapes.
- In a saucepan, mix 1 cup of baking soda with 1/3 cup of water, and heat over medium until dissolved.
- Add food coloring to the mixture if desired.
- Place the snowflake shapes in a jar or container and pour the baking soda solution over them.
- Tie a string to the top of the snowflake and suspend it in the jar.
- Let the jar sit undisturbed for 24-48 hours for crystal growth.
- Carefully remove the snowflakes and allow them to dry on a baking sheet.
Notes
For added sparkle, sprinkle glitter over your wet snowflakes. You can also experiment with different shapes and colors.
