Description

An engaging and educational hands-on activity for kids that combines science and art through chemical reactions with baking soda and vinegar.

Ingredients

  • Baking soda
  • Vinegar
  • Food coloring (preferably neon or glow-in-the-dark)
  • Miniature cups or containers
  • Tray or a large shallow dish (to catch overflow)
  • Stirring stick (like a craft stick or spoon)
  • Optional: glitter (for added sparkle)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Your Workspace: Find a clean area and lay down a tray to contain any mess. Gather all materials.
  2. Create the Tree Base: In each cup, add 2-3 tablespoons of baking soda.
  3. Add Color: Pour drops of food coloring into the baking soda and swirl gently to mix.
  4. Create the Reaction: Slowly pour vinegar over each mound and watch the fizzing reaction.
  5. Repeat and Enjoy: Reapply vinegar or add more coloring for a second reaction; glitter can be added for sparkle.

Notes

Try different types of vinegar and natural food coloring alternatives for variations. Use a large container to create a ‘growing forest’ display.
