Description
An engaging experiment to create beautiful crystalline tree decorations using baking soda and pipe cleaners.
Ingredients
Scale
- ½ cup baking soda
- 1 cup water
- A small container (like a jar or glass)
- Pipe cleaners (green and brown for tree and trunk)
- String (optional, for hanging)
- Food coloring (optional)
- Spoon for stirring
Instructions
- Prepare the Pipe Cleaner Tree: Twist together several green pipe cleaners to form a tree shape and create a sturdy trunk with a brown pipe cleaner at the bottom.
- Make the Solution: In a small pot or pan, heat 1 cup of water until warm (not boiling). Slowly stir in ½ cup of baking soda until fully dissolved. Add a few drops of food coloring if desired.
- Submerge the Tree: Place your pipe cleaner tree into the container, making sure it stands upright. Carefully pour the baking soda solution into the container until the tree is submerged.
- Wait and Watch: Allow the mixture to sit undisturbed for several hours or overnight to observe the crystals form and grow on the tree!
- Display Your Creation: Once the crystals have fully formed, remove the tree from the solution and let it dry on a paper towel before displaying it proudly.
Notes
Change colors and shapes of the trees for customization. Adding glitter can enhance the sparkle of the crystals.
