Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 medium-sized apple (preferably red or green)
  • 1 tablespoon of baking soda
  • 1/4 cup of white vinegar
  • Food coloring (red or yellow for lava effect)
  • Small plate or tray (to catch spills)
  • Optional: additional decorations (sprinkles, edible glitter)

Instructions

  1. Use a knife to carefully cut a cone-shaped hole in the top of the apple.
  2. Spoon 1 tablespoon of baking soda into the hole you just created.
  3. Drip a few drops of food coloring into the baking soda.
  4. Slowly pour 1/4 cup of vinegar into the hole and watch the reaction occur!
  5. Allow the fizzing to finish and enjoy tasting any of the apple that’s left. Clean any mess to wrap up your experiment.

Notes

Try using different types of apples or varying food coloring for unique lava colors. Adult supervision is recommended for younger children.
